After emerging from Bankruptcy protection, Delta Air Lines is planning an aggressive expansion of its long haul transatlantic operations. Amongst the short term plans for the airline is the decision to take advantage of the new open skies agreement to get slots from Heathrow to the USA.
Currently, it is only Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, American Airlines, and United Airlines who can offer flights to New York and other American cities from Heathrow, but this is set to end soon, and Delta has confirmed that it plans to be at the front of the queue for slots when they are made available in March next year.
Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe, and the ability for an airline to offer transatlantic flights from there gives it the chance to offer direct connections with most other cities in the world, and entry to a massive network of European routes operated by BA and other short haul carriers.
