Delta Air Lines is thought to be close to reintroducing its New York to Tel Aviv route as part of its ongoing strategy to increase the number of international services that it offers from the US. The airline operated the service briefly during 2001, but was forced to cancel the flights following the collapse in demand after the September 11th attacks on New York.
The airline currently offers flights to Tel Aviv from its main hub at Atlanta, but the flights to New York from Tel Aviv would be far more popular, especially since the only other US airline currently offering the route is Continental Airlines.
El Al, the Israeli national airline already offers a number of flights between Tel Aviv and New York JFK and Newark airports with a Delta Code Share facility, but may be willing to cancel at least one service in return for a reciprocal agreement on passengers being put into place.
Although Delta Air Lines already have both the intention and capacity to offer a service, a spokesman from Israel's Tourism Ministry suggested that a JFK-Tel Aviv flight would not be possible before 2008.
