A large hole in the fuselage of a Qantas 747 on a flight to Melbourne from Hong Kong caused it to perform an emergency landing in Manila last Friday.
Initial reports suggest that an oxygen cylinder in the forward cargo area may have caused the explosion that blasted a hole in the side of the Qantas aircraft. There was a loss of height immediately following the explosion, the plane losing about 20,000 feet before the pilot and crew stabilised it. Following this they arranged the landing at Manila to get down on the ground as soon as possible.
Although startling the pilots were in control of the incident for most of the time, with the passengers being kept aware of developments to avoid any panic. Qantas Airways reported no injuries of the nearly 350 passengers and 19 crew members.
