Just over 230 miles by road from Atlanta, and an easy drive in a hire car from the city is Savannah, the historic plantation city that was one of the first settlements in Georgia. A city blighted by economic problems at the end of the cotton age, Savannah's well-preserved historic district contains a collection of over 1000 restored buildings.
Fans of moon faced actor Tom Hanks will no doubt flock to the city in order to sit on the park bench on Chippewa Square, which became famous as a major scene in the film Forrest Gump, and which upstaged Hank's acting with an Oscar winning display of woodenness rarely seen in modern cinema.
