There are many islands in Hauraki Gulf that offer the chance to escape the bustle of the city, and get back to nature, either as a day trip, or for a couple of days camping. Rangitoto is around 10KM from the city, and has many hiking tracks around the volcano that dominates it.

Waiheke is one of the most popular, and offers great swimming and sea kayaking, as well as having a permanent community who specialise in art, and there is a gallery on the island.
