Within a short distance of the city centre, the old town of Spandau is home to the imposing fortress known as the Citadel, from which you can enjoy attractive views over the city, and tour the historic buildings.
The suburb of Potsdam is the sight from which the allies decided the future carving up of Berlin and Germany after the Second World War. There are many palaces and large houses in the Potsdam suburb, where the rulers of Germany lived in splendour during the great imperial ages, and many of these including Schloss Sanssoucci which was built in "French" style by tasteless King Friedrich the Great in the 18th century, which, although fascinating to explore, is also, quite frankly nauseating.
