Elephanta Island is located a short boat ride from Mumbai, and is home to some of the most interesting attractions in the form of the carved out cave temples built around 1500 years ago. The shrines are home to many statues including the spectacular 6m tall Trimurti sculpture of a triple headed Shiva acting as creator protector and destroyer, which has to be seen to be believed.
The island gets its name from a monolithic sculpture of an elephant found by Portuguese explorers, and some attractions bear the scars of vandalism from the same era.
Monkeys abound on the island, and will pester you for food and follow you around all the time that you are there.
