To the north west of the city, in rural Pennsylvania Dutch Country, you can visit the peculiar communities of Amish and Mennonites, who live traditional lives on the plains making a living by farming in 18th century style and playing on their history to make themselves an attraction for modern tourists. With strict adherence to the bible, and a culture utterly divorced from the rest of the population of the USA, a day trip into the countryside is an absolute must, although you should refrain from taking photographs.
