The divided island of Cyprus lies in the Eastern Mediterranean to the South of Turkey. The Southern part of the Island is known as the Republic of Cyprus and is governed by locally elected administration, while the Northern Half of the island is known as Turkish North Cyprus, and has been controlled from Ankara by the Turkish government since the war in 1972 when they invaded.
The island of Cyprus is well developed as a tourist destination, and attracts visitors from all over the world to its beaches and nightlife throughout the year.
The capital of Nicosia lies on the border between the two halves of the island, and is itself divided by the so-called Green line. It is possible to cross to the North on a day permit, although much of the accommodation and attractions of the city are in the South.
The most famous resorts are around Aiya Napa, and Larnaca, although Limassol is also very popular. There is an enormous variety of places to stay in Cyprus, meaning that everyone is well catered for on this beautiful island
