With streets that remain grid locked throughout most of the day, getting around is never going to be easy in Jakarta. You can't walk between many of the attractions for three reasons, firstly, its too far, secondly the pavements are packed and pickpockets are as common as flies in a public lavatory in Doncaster, and thirdly, drivers frustrated by the lack of movement on the roads will often mount the kerb and pay scant regard to people in their way. The only public transport is on buses and these are clean and reliable, although you're still stuck in traffic.
If you use a taxi to get around, then prepare for the worst, they rarely go the quickest way, and you need to agree a price - preferably in writing, and stick to it.
If you're thinking about renting a car in Jakarta, then one word will suffice. Don't.
