The Maldives are spread across thousands of square miles of the Indian ocean, and so getting between the islands by boat or by sea plane is the only way of seeing more than the island you stay on. Sea planes are vital as a mode of transport between the more far flung regions of the country and Malé, although if you want to just pop over to a nearby deserted island for a picnic or to swim off an empty beach, then this is simple in a speed boat, or one of the small boats known locally as Dhoni.
Several cruise company's offer itineraries around the islands, and one of the most popular is operated by the Four Seasons resort and Spa, and takes in some of the best diving from a luxury yacht, the Four Seasons Island Explorer.
