Nashville international airport is located around 13 km outside the city centre, and from there you can easily get a taxi to your hotel at the beginning of your stay in the city.
The actual downtown area is easy enough to navigate on foot, although you will need to use public transport such as the MTA shuttle between the Riverfront and the famous Music Row. Riverboats also operate along the Cumberland River to get you to Opryland.
Hiring a car is useful if you plan to use Nashville as a base for exploring the local area, although if you're planning to stay in and around the city, then they're not a great deal of use, as parking can be quite difficult.
