The last thing you want to do in Rome is hire a car, unless you are planning to stay outside the city, and see the sights of the countryside, like the harbour of Ostia and only travel into the city occasionally. Most people are best served by using public transport, although this can be crowded and the roads of Rome tend to be very congested during the day. The best thing to do is to ensure that you have a hotel close to the main attractions, and walk between them.
