Bordering the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, Oman faces east over the Indian Ocean, and is a fine destination for year round sun and quality hotels. The capital city Muscat is quieter and less glamorous than Dubai, but it has en excellent old town and some good museums which introduce visitors to the long and rich history of the region, and show that there is more to Arabia than just endless desert and oil. There is a vibrant colourful culture, where hospitality has been raised to an art form, and visitors are welcomed more than anywhere else in the world.
Having long been a favourite destination for British travellers looking to visit a place that is at once traditional, yet also offers a high standard of modern accommodation. The city of Muscat has much to offer, most notable amongst its attractions are the souk at Mutrah, which is thought to be the best in the region, and a great place to practice your haggling skills against the locals.
The restored Watchtower that looks out over the corniche has 100 steps, but the climb to the top is worthwhile once you see the views.
You can get cheap deals on flights and package holidays to Muscat throughout the year, although Christmas and Easter are peak times for travel, and accommodation is more expensive at these times.
