Food is one of the great Italian passions, and Milan is no different to the rest of the country in this respect. The centre of Milan is crowded with restaurants all hoping to relieve you of your money in return for a fantastic evening dining out in style. The pasta and pizza are of course unlike anything you may have eaten in England, and are truly out of this world, but the many influences of cuisines from all over the country mean that you will be utterly spoiled for choice in Milan. Tuscan food is very popular, and many restaurants will offer a wide choice, including such delights as Lamb braised in Chianti, and raw beef Carpaccio to tempt you.
Highly recommended for the sheer variety of food it offers is Taverna Visconti, close to the cathedral, which has a wine bar upstairs, and also Marino Alla Scala across from the opera house, a great place to begin an evening of high culture with a gourmet meal.
