An absolute shoppers paradise, where old and new meet to offer buyers a truly amazing variety of goods, Mumbai combines bazaars and department stores like nowhere else on earth, and is a great place to pick up clothing and antiques amongst many other things.
Fashion Street, which can be found on M. Gandhi Road Cross Maidan and Azad Maidan has a row of market stalls selling many different styles of clothing from traditional Indian Saris and hats to slogan heavy western t-shirts. The tailors of Mumbai are also famous, and you can get a good quality suit tailor made in whatever style you want overnight.
The large bazaars are a great place to pick up larger items such as furniture, as well as jewellery, although you should always take the provenance of items with a pinch of salt, as the quality and age of antiques is never guaranteed.
If you prefer to shop in real comfort, then stick to the beautiful air-conditioned mall at the Taj Mahal hotel, where you can visit several different boutiques and pick up more luxurious goods.
Shopping hours in Mumbai vary from place to place, although usually are from 10am until 7pm, and goods carry VAT at rates between 4% and 15%.
