While Rio is certainly not the greatest shopping destination in the world, it is still a good place to pick up a few bargains, particularly on designer clothes and traditional Brazilian Crafts - as well as any essentials you may need if your holiday in Brazil is including any time visiting the Jungles.
The main shopping areas are around Copacabana, and it is in the area around Avenida Nossa Senhora that you will find many top fashion shops and jewellers, which still offer many good bargains,
Rio Sul in the Botafogo district is a large shopping mall that contains a vast number of different shops as well as restaurants, and is an easy place to lose a whole day.
For handicrafts and art, the best bet is to head for one of the many markets throughout the city, and of which the hippie market on a Saturday around the Saracuras fountain in Ipanema is the best.
