South Africa is a great place to watch and play sports; Durban hosts many major events, including international cricket and rugby matches in the city throughout the year.
Close to the city, there are several excellent golf courses, as well as areas where you can ride horses and mountain bikes through beautiful country parks.
The beaches around Durban are justifiably renowned for the excellent surfing that is on offer, and close by, you can also take part in many other water sports including wind surfing, para-sailing, and diving - with some great reefs off the coast.
The water along the coast is warmed throughout the year by the Agulhas current in the Indian Ocean, and during the summer gets up to 24C, making it excellent for swimming in.
At certain times of the year, the sea does get dangerous, with great white sharks a problem, although the beaches are well protected by life guards and shark nets around the main areas.
