The Sepilok reserve comprises of over 4500 hectares of protected rainforest, and is home to orang-utans that have been orphaned or captured elsewhere on the island. Day trips from the tourism centre in Kota Kinabalu cost around £80 including flights and lunch, and usually also take in the stilted water village of Sim Sim, the Australian War Memorial, the historic town of Sandakan, and the stunning Buddhist temple Puu Jih Shih, which was built in 1987.
