Something that no visitor to Portland should miss out on the chance to see is Mill Ends Park, the smallest urban park in the whole world. The park was originally to be the site of a lamppost which never appeared. The park became a local joke in the newspaper column of journalist Dick Fagan, and was officially recognised in 1976. The park, which measures just 2 feet in diameter and lies in the middle of a busy road has over the years had a swimming pool (for butterflies), and a miniature ferris wheel amongst its attractions.
