Every June, the Tour de France takes place all around the country, and dozens of cyclists take to the road on a gruelling 14-day road race that makes for a great spectacle, particularly in the mountains.
France is home to one of the largest formula one events of the year with the French Grand Prix, and although dates change from year to year, the Formula One circus normally rolls into the Magny Cours circuit near Nevers in the South of the Country, Monte Carlo, close to Nice also hosts a race - The impossibly glamorous Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place just after the Cannes Film Festival in late May. Motor racing fans may also want to see the Le Mans 24 Hour race in mid July.
The largest public holiday in France is Bastille Day, which is celebrated in July 14th with fireworks and parties held to commemorate the founding of the French Republic.
