Aside from the pleasant coastal strip, and the shopping and nightlife in Marseille, the city is also home to a number of excellent museums and galleries detailing the history and artistic heritage of the region. One of the most impressive is the Musee de Santon, which highlights the inhabitants of the Provence region, and includes many depictions of day-to-day life over the centuries. A poignant reminder of the holocaust, and how it affected the large Jewish population of the region is on permanent display at the Memorial des camps de la mort, and the exhibits are quite moving, particularly the eyewitness accounts of life in the concentration camps.
A more light hearted experience can be found at the Musee de la Mode, which is dedicated to the fashion world, and has over 2000 outfits from the last hundred years in its collection - slightly less than one would find in my own wardrobe.
