Ignoring the status of Milan as a centre of fashion and sport in Italy, many visitors to Milan will be drawn by the culture and beauty of the city. La Duomo, the massive Gothic Cathedral dominates the city centre, and has a museum dedicated to its history next door. With some 3400 statues decorating the roof, the roof of the cathedral can be climbed to up 158 gruelling steps (the faint hearted can use the lift), and the views from the top are nothing short of breathtaking.
Nearby, La Scala opera house is the home of Italian opera music, and throughout the year, there are concerts held inside the beautiful building. Seats range in price from the very cheap to the very expensive, and can be arranged on the day from one of the many ticket agencies in the city. The museum next door also has a good bar in which to have a drink before the performance.
The Museum of Historic Art in the Sforza Castle includes a huge collection of beautiful classical and modern art from the archives of the Sforza family who ruled northern Italy.
Located within the 15th century castle, the museum is home to works by many of the true masters including Leonardo da Vinci, and notably, the last work by Michelangelo, the Pieta Rondanina, which is left unfinished.
