The enigmatic Nazca lines in the coastal desert around 400KM south of Lima on the Pan American Highway are all that remains from the Nazca civilisation that predated the Inca. From the ground they seem like nothing more than shallow ditches carved in the surface of the desert, however taking to the air reveals the huge pattern that represent animals and shapes. One of the world's greatest mysteries, they have baffled science since their discovery and for travellers to Peru; they are considered an absolute must-see.
