The second city of Sweden, Gothenburg is a great destination for tourists, having one of the best theme parks in Europe (Liseberg), as well as plenty of museums. Gothenburg is a picturesque city that makes a fantastic family holiday destination, with loads of great value hotels, and is easily accessible from the UK by plane, or by domestic flight from Stockholm.
In the north of the country, beyond the Arctic Circle, visitors interested in the Sami culture of the Lapps should pay a visit to Jokkmokk, which has become a living museum to the fast disappearing Sami way of life. Outside the centre, there are great opportunities to see the Northern Lights (aurora borealis), and being North of the Arctic Circle, you get the benefit of midnight sun in June and July.
Nearby, the Sarek National Park offers some of the best and most demanding hiking in Northern Europe. Treks through the park can take a week or more, but the views, particularly over the river delta at Rapa Alv in the east of the park are spectacular.
