From the beautiful scenery of the Alps, where you can ski or mountain climb on some of the most enigmatic mountains in Europe, to the relaxing lakeside resorts and spas where you can lie back and do nothing, there is plenty to do, or not to do in Switzerland.
Lucerne is the quintessential Swiss city, and lies in an excellent area, located in scenic countryside fronting the lake that bears its name. The city has a beautiful old town, and several great museums including the large transport museum to keep you occupied between trips into the countryside .
Lake Lucerne is excellent for water sports, and there are many rental shops lining the banks from which you can get a boat for the day.
The famous mountain resort of Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn, and during the winter, plays host to skiers enjoying some of the best slopes in Europe, as well as fantastic hotels and hospitality. During the summer, climbers flock to the town to pit themselves against the mountains, and in the centre of Zermatt, there is a small monument listing the names of those who were unsuccessful.
Montreux is the centrepiece resort on the Swiss Riviera on the banks of Lake Geneva, and is a popular place to visit for those looking to relax in elegant hotels and spas while enjoying the excellent summer weather. Close by is the impressive Chateau de Chillon, where Byron wrote several of his works. The castle dates from around the 11th century, but has been much modified and enlarged in the years since. The building and its famous dungeons are open to the public.
