In major areas of Sri Lanka, buses and private cars or taxis are the best way of getting around. It is best to rely on letting other people do the driving for you, as the local standards are quire poor, and off the beaten track the roads are not so good.
Getting between major areas like Kandy, Colombo, and the coastal resorts in the South West is easy as the major routes through the area are well paved.
Travel should be avoided in the Extreme North of the Country where there are still some rebels who do not recognise the ceasefire, but the rest of the country is safe for tourism.
