Within driving distance of Chicago, there are excellent beaches at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The majority of the area is open to the public, and the sandy beaches are a popular day out from the city on weekends in the summer. They are about 64KM South East of the city, and stretch for around 30KM - so there is usually somewhere to relax in private.
