The waterfront area really comes alive for July 4th, American independence day, when there are firework displays, and a carnival atmosphere throughout the city, and since Chicago has a large Irish population, the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in mid March is a chance for the city to consume awesome amounts of Guinness and chase leprechauns in one of the many Irish bars after watching the parade through the downtown area.
