Mexico has a wide range of events taking place throughout the year from film and music festivals to the day of the dead celebrations, and at most times there is at least one thing going on to keep you occupied.
Some of the most important national holidays are the Independence Day commemorating the beginning of the war with Spain, and in the week leading up to Easter, it is not unusual to see hooded men on their knees carrying Crucifix through the city and whipping themselves. The festival is called Semana Santa, which means Holy week, and is a re-enactment of the passion of Jesus.
