No visit to Mexico City is complete without a trip to the area known as Xochimilco, which lies around 20KM south of the Centro Historica. Xochimilco translates as "place where the flowers grow" and is a picturesque region criss-crossed by canals. On weekends, many Mexican families head to the area, and there is an atmosphere like a fiesta around the place. If you like things a bit quieter, then head to Xochimilco during the week, when it is quieter, and you can get better deals on the gondola rides on the canals.
