From Wellington's airport, getting into the city is a simple matter of either catching a bus, or using one of the taxis there. Getting around the city is easy because it is so compact. There is a good public transport system, with regular buses and trains throughout the city and outer regions, but if you're planning to do lots of touring around, it makes sense to hire a car for the duration of your stay. Bear in mind, that you cannot usually take hire cars from one island to the other, and need to arrange car rental once on each island.
