In the city centre, there are a whole raft of museums and art galleries to keep culture vultures interested, and these include the Cultural Museum and Slave Lodge, The Bo Kaap Museum, and the Michaelis Collection of Flemish and Dutch art, which includes paintings by several masters including Rembrandt.
From the harbour it is possible to take a boat trip to the notorious penal colony of Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for many years, and this trip is considered a must for travellers to the city. The tours are conducted by former inmates, and the insight that they give into South Africa's troubled past can bring tears to your eyes.
